چکیده

In geophysical and environmental problems, it is common to have multiple variables of interest measured at the same location and time. These multiple variables typically have dependence over space (and/or time). As a consequence, there is a growing interest in developing models for multivariate spatial processes, in particular, the cross-covariance models. On the other hand, many data sets these days cover a large portion of the Earth such as satellite data, which require valid covariance models on a globe. We present a class of parametric covariance models for multivariate processes on a globe. The covariance models are flexible in capturing nonstationarity in the data yet computationally feasible and require moderate numbers of parameters. We apply our covariance model to surface temperature and precipitation data from an NCAR climate model output. We compare our model to the multivariate version of the Matérn cross-covariance function and models based on coregionalization and demonstrate the superior performance of our model in terms of AIC (and/or maximum loglikelihood values) and predictive skill. We also present some challenges in modeling the cross-covariance structure of the temperature and precipitation data. Based on the fitted results using full data, we give the estimated cross-correlation structure between the two variables.

Matérn-based nonstationary cross-covariance models for global processes

Many spatial processes in environmental applications, such as climate variables and climate model errors on a global scale, exhibit complex nonstationary dependence structure, in not only their marginal covariance but also their cross-covariance. Flexible crosscovariance models for processes on a global scale are critical for an accurate description of each spatial process as well as the cross-...

Cross-Covariance Functions for Multivariate Geostatistics

Continuously indexed datasets with multiple variables have become ubiquitous in the geophysical, ecological, environmental and climate sciences, and pose substantial analysis challenges to scientists and statisticians. For many years, scientists developed models that aimed at capturing the spatial behavior for an individual process; only within the last few decades has it become commonplace to ...

A Generalized Convolution Model for Multivariate Nonstationary Spatial Processes

We propose a constructive method for specifying flexible classes of nonstationary stochastic models for multivariate spatial data. The method is based upon convolutions of spatially varying covariance functions and produces mathematically valid covariance structures. This method generalizes the convolution approach suggested by Majumdar and Gelfand (2007) to extend multivariate spatial covarian...

Multivariate character process models for the analysis of two or more correlated function-valued traits.

Various methods, including random regression, structured antedependence models, and character process models, have been proposed for the genetic analysis of longitudinal data and other function-valued traits. For univariate problems, the character process models have been shown to perform well in comparison to alternative methods. The aim of this article is to present an extension of these mode...

Some New Methods for Prediction of Time Series by Wavelets

Extended Abstract. Forecasting is one of the most important purposes of time series analysis. For many years, classical methods were used for this aim. But these methods do not give good performance results for real time series due to non-linearity and non-stationarity of these data sets. On one hand, most of real world time series data display a time-varying second order structure. On th...
